Julie joined the NMC in 2021 to advise and support the ongoing review, development and implementation of the education standards and the standards of proficiency for nursing and nursing associates. Currently she is working collaboratively on regulatory reform, the implementation of the post- registration standards and the review of practice learning.

Registering as a mental health nurse in 1996 Julie started her career as a Community Mental Health Nurse, where she progressed to Team Leader in 2002. Within this time frame, she also worked as a Lecturer-Practitioner at Nottingham University.  Moving to work full time in higher education in 2003 she has over 20 years of academic experience, with a variety of opportunities in relation to advancing her own learning, teaching and research portfolio.

Crafting a continuous approach to personal and professional development, she has gained a Master’s Degree in Gender theory; Post-Graduate Certificates in both Education and Management, became a Clinical Hypnotherapist and earned a PhD in Higher Education. Her thesis focused on the relationship between mental health nursing students’ backgrounds, and their psychosocial motives for career choice; and, the influence these motivations have on their capacity to learn compassionate caring behaviours and critical thinking dispositions in their educational course. In addition, Julie’s main areas of interest are:  Mental Health Nursing, Feminism, Clinical Supervision, Psychodynamic and Critical Theories and Professional Practice.

Developing and maintaining meaningful relationships is a passion for Julie as she believes it’s through these alliances, that we can all reach our unlimited potential.
