CMV (Cytomegalovirus) is a common virus that can infect people of all ages. Most healthy adults and children will have no symptoms and no long-term effects. However, CMV can pose serious problems to unborn babies if a woman catches it during pregnancy. Congenital CMV (when infection is passed from mother to baby across the placenta) is one of the most common non-genetic causes of inner ear hearing loss and a major cause of childhood disability.
Despite this, there is very little awareness of CMV and the facts are often misunderstood. A diagnosis of CMV can be stressful and confusing.
CMV Action is the only UK charity offering advice and support to families affected by cCMV.
All advice is founded on the most recent evidence-based clinical research and current practices. We raise public and professional awareness and campaign for better prevention measures and standards of care within our health service.
